Galveston has been occupied since the early 1500s, officially incorporating as a city in 1839. From 1839 to 1900 the city was very prosperous and grew quickly, although this came to a halt when it was struck by a hurricane in 1900. Recovery from the hurricane, which required the construction of a sea wall and the raising of the whole city, took until 1962!

However, this did cause Galveston to diversify economically away from being solely a port town, and the leisure and entertainment industry grew as Galveston became a playground for the wealthy.

Galveston has more than a dozen historic museums (including the Texas seaport museum) and historical properties open to the public, miles of beaches, an aquarium and a rainforest enclosed in glass pyramids at Moody Gardens, boat tours of the harbor, and air tours of the island.
