Located on the northern edge of the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area (ODNRA), Florence is known for the hiking, bird watching, horse back and dune buggy riding activities.

The old town features good restaurants, coffee houses, and boutiques. Notable is the Dolly Wares Doll museum displays a wide variety of dolls and specialises in the repair and restoration of broken dolls.

10 miles north of Florence is the enormous sea grotto of the Sea Lion Caves featuring the only mainland rookery of Stellar's sea lion in the contiguous United States. South of Florence is the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum which has exhibits of pioneer items such as kitchen and lumbering artifacts.
